penguins atop conference, could it get better?

Whats great is that the Pittsburgh Penguins are now the projected first seed in the Eastern conference and would have home-ice advantage if the playoffs were to start. Could it get any better?

The answer is yes, Crosby has made his return in the Penguins 2-0 win over the Lightning last night, Gary Roberts will be back soon, Hossa will be back in a week and Whitney returned from a groin injury last night as well.

Think about these lines when everyone is healthy (hopefully):
1. Sykora, Malkin, Malone
2. Hossa, Crosby, Talbot
3. Roberts, Staal, Dupuis
4. Kennedy, Ruutu, Laraque

Defense:
1. Gonchar, Whitney
2. Whitney, Letang
3. Sydor, Gill

Goalie
1. Ty Conlkin
2. Marc-Andre Fleury

That potential depth chart is a scary thought for opposing teams.

I'm glad, Ray Shero had the stones to pull off a trade that brought us a legitimate winger to complement Crosby who will score 30 goals (Hossa) for two players who had 18 goals combined and a center on a center-heavy team. I have full confidence in Shero that he will make every attempt to resign Hossa. This team has now been construct to make a deep run at the cup for this year and two years after. Watch for this team to continue to challenge for the top seed and even make it to the Eastern finals.

the penguins win without crosby

Tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated Montreal 2-0 and moved into a temporary hold of the Atlantic division lead. This was despite the exclusion of Crosby due to health reasons (high ankle sprain) Why did this occur?.

I think this is why:
  • Dany Sabourin played with no rust, posting another shutout. In the last 12 games the Penguins are 10-1-1. Stalwart goaltending from Conklin and Sabourin has been instrumental in the Penguins recent climb up the standings.
  • The fourth line stepping up to record the game winning goal. With Crosby out, all lines will need to produce. Especially Malkin and Sykora will need to step up. Which leads to...
  • The pairing of Malkin and Sykora on the same line was a good choice by coach Michel Therrien. They played well together despite the lack of scoring And no, I don't count the empty netter, even though that was still awesome).
  • The Canadiens inability to play well despite their poor home record (If that makes sense)
  • Few penalties
The Penguins won this game, but I am worried about when the Pens play the Flyers next Thursday. We will see how this will carry out, I guess.
